Good governance is everybody's issue.

Morizane Boyes - President of MSSA.
With all the drama surrounding the allegations of 'State capture' in South Africa in recent years, it is important that all members of civil society remain Alert that it never happens to any organisation by any one group.

The only way that the 'capture' of any organisation can be stopped is if the members apply their minds, demand transparency, and insist that processes exist in order to stop any one clique from gaining control.

While associations cannot be owned by anyone, associations may still be captured by groups in order to serve their own ends.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) has always been mindful of the problem, and has thus a number of mechanisms in place to stop any attempts at 'capture'.

The most important rule is Rule 9.7 of the Constitution which limits the amount of representation that any club may have on the Management Board to 40%.

The full list of Management Board members is as follows:

Name Position Club
Morizane Boyes President VexxedPhoenix
James Evans 1st Vice-President Knights Mind Sports Club
Adele Janse van Rensburg Vice-President (Umpiring) GenerationX
Sheraaz Nunnian Vice-President (Liaison) East London Mind Sports
Johan van Breda Vice-President (Development) ZAGA
Leonard Loftus Vice-President (Events) Masters of Mind Sports
Joseph Matlhong Board Gaming Representative North West University - Vaal
Paula Loftus Card Gaming Representative Masters of Mind Sports
Ryan Boyes Esports Representative BNKR
Terence Allwright Wargames Old Edwardian Wargames Club
Blair Hamberger Women s’ Desk IntenSity Gaming
Twane Martins Disabled Representative BNKR
Darryl-Lee Bruce-Smith National Schools’ Director HTS Sasolburg
Carl Holliday Legal Advisor Knights Mind Sports Club
Jason Batzofin Player’s Representative Old Edwardian Wargames Club
Colin Webster General Secretary Old Edwardian Wargames Club

Thus the majority  of the Management Board will always be made up by other clubs.

Also by having separation of powers, in that the Management Board is obliged to refer certain issues to Council, the Executive Committee, Boards of Control, Selection Committee, and so forth, the Managements Board's powers are not absolute and always open to inspection.

However, the real strength of MSSA's system is that each and every club is directly affiliated to MSSA and is able to participate in the electoral process. As such, if anybody is elected, it is because the membership has spoken.

It is the membership that enforces the rules, and it is from the membership that office-bearers are drawn.

That is probably one of the reasons why MSSA is the largest membership based organisation for esports in South Africa.
